Background

Maryland529 needed a concise way to explain how college savings works through a series of explainer videos. The original video, “What is a 529?” was created to answer just that. The series set out to help families understand the benefits of saving, the differences between savings plans, and how money saved in a 529 plan can be spent in the future.

Production

Katelynne created boards that were playful and invoked a sense of “hand-made” that I wanted to preserve in the animation style. I wanted it to be fun and approachable given the overwhelming nature of planning for the future, but not too playful that it alienates the target audience (parents, grandparents, etc.) I played around a bit with figuring out how to best replicate stop motion until I settled on the animation you see in the final video. This style would go on to define the animation for future explainer videos for MD529, both animated by me and other freelancers.
